Large amounts of spent shale are produced during oil production from o
il shale. This spent shale has a caloric value of about 1100 kcal/kg a
nd could be used as a low grade fuel for energy production. Up to now
the spent shale has not been used. The first steps towards the use of
spent shale were taken by Raul Uuesoo in the fifties [1-3]. He investi
gated the combustion of spent shale in a fluidized bed, adapted combus
tion theory for spent shale particles and provided the foundation for
calculations for spent shale furnaces. A part of his investigations ar
e reported in short form in this article.
