Despite an explosion of new treatments for diabetes in the last decade
, there has been Little additional information for the treatment of di
abetes for certain common clinical problems. In this article, the trea
tments for four situations are reviewed: perioperative diabetes manage
ment, the transfer to subcutaneous insulin from an intravenous insulin
infusion, diabetes management during glucocorticoid therapy, and diab
etes treatment with hyperalimentation. New agents for the treatment of
diabetes, particularly new insulin analogues, will likely allow for b
etter glycemic control during these time periods.
