The sudden-perturbation approximation is invoked to calculate effectiv
e cross sections of vibrational-energy transfer and broadening of isol
ated lines in spectra of symmetric-top molecules. Within the well-deve
loped formalism of this approximation, linear and spherical molecules
are treated as the limiting cases stemming from the general formula. T
he theory is illustrated with numerical calculations of vibrational re
laxation of SF6 in rare gases.
