Heat release in thread-like silver azide crystals exposed to a contact
less electric field is studied. Concurrent volumetric measurements hav
e demonstrated that in slow AgN3 decomposition up to 10(4) eV is evolv
ed per radical, which can not be explained by heat release due to the
decomposition reaction in the anionic sublattice. The experimental res
ults are used to approximately calculate the homogeneous concentration
of free holes and the rates of generation and recombination of nonequ
ilibrium charge carriers.
