Weekly estimation of total phytosterols in the fermenting samples of s
ucculent shoots of bamboos (Dendrocalmus hamiltonii and D. strictus) g
rown in Manipur, showed that their levels varied in fresh samples of t
he two species of bamboos. Fermentation of samples with crude inoculum
from exudates of fermented bamboos available in Manipur as ''Soibum''
for 7 to 35 days nearly doubled phytosterols levels in both species.
TLC revealed four phytosterols, viz. beta-sito-sterol, Stigmasterol, C
ampesterol and an unidentified phytosterol in crude phytosterol sample
