It is proposed to study Hg-oxide ceramics, which are high-temperature
superconductors, with Hg-199 NMR spectroscopy. As an exemplary applica
tion of this method first room-temperature Hg-199 spectra and spin-lat
tice relaxation times of samples with different macrostructure are pre
sented. A spin-lattice relaxation time of T1 = 35 ms is found. All sam
ples exhibit similar characteristic powder spectra caused by an axiall
y symmetric Hg-199 spin interaction. The isotropic value and the aniso
tropy of the tensor relative to solid HgCl2 as a standard substance is
estimated.
