We investigated the specific magnetization sigma(T, B), torque moments
L(phi), Young's modulus E(T), internal friction Q(-1)(T), and magneto
striction lambda(B) of a single crystal and polycrystalline samples, o
f the SmFe11Ti compound, in the temperature region 77-700 K in magneti
c fields up to 1.6 T. Below the Curie temperature (T-c=600 K) this com
pound was found to be a uniaxial highly anisotropic ferromagnet with a
saturation magnetization sigma(s)=126 G.cm(3) g(-1) and the uniaxial
anisotropy constant K-1 =4.2.10(7)erg/cm(3) at 300 K. The temperature
dependence of Young's modulus shows typical metallic behavior. It was
found that the magnetoelastic energy of SmFe11Ti is much smaller than
the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.
