Abstract
This paper describes a controlled trial to assess the performance of c old bitumen emulsion macadam compared with conventional bitumen macada m produced in accordance with BS 4987:Part 1 for footway surfacing, Tw o trial sites were selected in Leicestershire to reflect conditions ty pical of a lightly used residential street and a much more heavily use d urban footway, The findings demonstrated that the cold emulsion maca dam had significantly lower elastic stiffness and was much less resist ant to deformation, However, a detailed visual inspection of both site s two and a half years into the trial clearly suggests that cold emuls ion macadam may be able to satisfy 'fitness for purpose' criteria.
