The nature of the ovarian factor(s) stimulating biosyntheses in the ma
in nidamental glands of Sepia officinalis L. was investigated using ra
dioimmunoassay (RIA) and in vitro bioassay. RIA revealed the occurrenc
e of progesterone in the follicles and hemolymph of maturing and matur
e females. We observed a dose-dependent stimulation by progesterone of
the incorporation of [C-14] labelleds D-glucose in polysaccharides of
nidamental cells in suspension. These results show that the ovary is
one of the organs involved in the regulation of the activity of the ma
in nidamental glands.
