Ga. Gerencser, CRYOPROTECTION OF APLYSIA GUT BASOLATERAL MEMBRANES BY TREHALOSE, Comparative biochemistry and physiology. Part A, Physiology, 108(1), 1994, pp. 53-57
Cl--ATPase activity resides in the basolateral membrane of gut cells.
The sugar alcohols sorbitol, mannitol and glycerol could not maintain
any cryoprotection of the basolateral membrane fraction for at least 1
2 hr. The sugar, mannose, could not maintain any cryoprotection of bas
olateral membrane for at least 12 hr, while sucrose could only maintai
n 20% of basolateral membrane Cl--ATPase activity after 12 hr. Trehalo
se cryoprotected basolateral membrane Cl--ATPase activity by 98% of co
ntrol up to 48 hr.
