Rr. Amirov et Za. Saprykova, STUDY OF SODIUM DODECYL-SULFATE MICELLIZATION USING PARAMAGNETIC RELAXATION PROBES, Colloid journal of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 56(2), 1994, pp. 118-120
Sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) micellization in aqueous solutions was stu
died by the nuclear magnetic relaxation method using Gd3+, Fe3+, and M
n2+ ions as the paramagnetic probes. The critical micellization concen
tration (CMC) of the anionic surfactant (1.5 - 2 x 10(-3) M) and the b
inding degrees beta(m) of the above counterions with micelles (0.2, 0.
2, and 0.3, respectively) were established by this method. The fractio
n of the surfactant head groups bound to the cations was found to be i
ndependent of the cation charge and amounts to approximately 60% of th
e SDS micellar part.
