FTIR-ATR spectroscopy has been used to investigate the interdiffusion
of acrylic or alkyd-based polymer coatings with an epoxy resin underla
yer. It has been shown that there is considerable penetration on a sho
rt (hours) time scale and that strong hydrogen-bonding interactions oc
cur between top coat and resin. It has also been shown that a trimeric
isocyanate diffuses into the epoxy resin film and that this process d
epends on the degree of cross-linking of the resin. These data have im
portant implications for the design and use of paint and other industr
ial coatings.
