The extended Kalman filtering (EKF) method is used as an automatic cal
ibration procedure for the estimation of hydrogeological parameters ba
sed on groundwater head observation. The numerical tool employed is th
e dual reciprocity boundary element method (DRBEM). Numerical results
for steady and unsteady flow in heterogeneous aquifers have demonstrat
ed the potential of this combined procedure for groundwater applicatio
