The Fe 3p(3/2,1/2) --> Is X-ray Resonant Raman Scattering (RRS) from G
d3Fe5O12 shows an intense resonating feature in the vicinity of the K
absorption edge and a pronounced satellite in the emission spectrum ab
ove threshold. Comparison with Gd 3d(5/2) --> 2p(3/2) RRS reveals comm
on characteristics. The results are explained by inclusion of quadrupo
lar (E2) excitations in the intermediate states and electron correlati
on effects in the final states of the inelastic scattering process. Ex
perimental aspects on how inelastic scattering spectra are recorded ar
e briefly discussed. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
