A rupture of the body wall, and intrusion of the Ligula intestinalis p
lerocercoids into the aquatic environment was observed in extremely ra
re cases in the bream (Abramis brama). The survival of the parasite in
the water is possible for a short time (some days) and authors presen
t the hypothesis of the existence of a possible free-living phase of t
he L. intestinalis plerocercoids and its importance in life cycle of t
hese tapeworm.
