Abstract
Over the last five years, data acquisition and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems have evolved from mainframe-based sy stems to multilevel tiered systems to flat client-server architecture. This paper examines the necessity for this evolution and the technolo gy that spurred it on.
