The thermoelectric power and electrical conductivity of BaCe0.9Gd0.1O3
-delta were determined as functions of oxygen and water vapour activit
ies and temperature. Regions of oxide ion, electron hole and protonic
conductivity were observed. A theory of thermoelectric power of proton
conductors is presented and the possibility of using thermoelectric p
ower measurements to detect protonic conductivity is discussed. The th
eory cannot at present explain the results of all the measurements. (C
