Individuals with schizophrenia are at increased risk for attempted and
completed suicide. Management of the suicidal patient with schizophre
nia requires a multi-dimensional assessment of the individual's biopsy
chosocial functioning and resources. Treatment of co-morbid symptoms a
nd syndromes such as psychosis, depression, and substance abuse reduce
s the risk for suicidal behavior. interventions described include hosp
italization, outpatient crisis programs, and family treatment.
