Abstract
Melt-spun Al88Ni4Y8 ribbons are fully amorphous. Their primary crystal lization is studied by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffra ction and transmission electron microscopy. The primary alpha-Al cryst allites are 5-10 nm in diameter and arise by growth on nuclei, both qu enched in and generated during annealing. The kinetics of crystallizat ion can be affected by the quench rate used to form the amorphous phas e and by low-temperature pre-annealing.
