M. Carbucicchio et al., EFFECTS OF DIFFUSION AND INTERACTION PHENOMENA IN FE-AL THIN-FILM MULTILAYERS, Philosophical magazine. B. Physics of condensed matter. Statistical mechanics, electronic, optical and magnetic, 76(4), 1997, pp. 425-432
Fe-Al thin-film multilayers were deposited under ultrahigh vacuum by e
lectron-beam evaporation and then annealed in situ for times up to 30
h in the 300-450 K temperature range. Mossbauer and Auger analyses sho
wed that interdiffusion phenomena occurred during the deposition proce
ss, giving rise to a Fe-Al solid solution and to the formation of the
Fe2Al5 intermetallic compound. Isothermal annealing significantly modi
fied the relative amounts of these phases without destroying the perio
dicity of the multilayer.
