Abstract
The magnetic field dependence of the deformation in amorphous and nano crystalline Fe-Si-B-Nb-Cu ribbons has been measured under different ap plied transverse fields. Although the saturation magnetostriction cons tant of the samples is positive, a negative net deformation from the r emanence state to the saturated state has been found. These experiment al measurements can be explained only by considering the existence of volume fractions with magnetostriction constants of different signs wh ich are not completely coupled.
