J. Colin et al., SURFACE INSTABILITIES OF A STRESSED-CYLINDRICAL WHISKER, Philosophical magazine. A. Physics of condensed matter. Structure, defects and mechanical properties, 76(4), 1997, pp. 793-805
The energy variation of a cylindrical whisker is calculated when sinus
oidal fluctuations appear on its lateral surface. Calculation demonstr
ates that, beyond a critical value sigma(0)(p), the applied stress all
ows the surface to develop instabilities of short wavelengths. A kinet
ic study of the surface evolution has been performed to characterize t
he development of these instabilities when surface diffusion occurs.
