The sweep constant in grain growth, theta, is defined as the number o
f grains that disappear when the grain boundaries sweep through a tota
l volume equal to that of the average grain. An analytical derivation
is presented that expresses theta for self-similar grain growth solel
y in terms of the self-similar size distribution. Specific application
s of this analysis are presented, and the implications of these result
s with respect to grain growth kinetics are discussed. (C) 1997 Acta M
