This article reviews the role of ultrasonography in the diagnosis and
management of emergent or urgent gynecologic problems of infants and c
hildren, and the gynecologic and obstetric emergencies of adolescent g
irls. Pelvic sonography is usually the initial imaging modality chosen
in the evaluation of children and adolescents with vaginal bleeding,
pelvic pain, or pelvic masses. The important role of transvaginal sono
graphy in the nonvirginal patient is reviewed, and the diagnostic dile
mmas of early intrauterine and ectopic pregnancy are discussed.
