Due the examination of six Brown Swiss cows the <<Schinberg-fever>> cl
inical picture known for years in central Switzerland could be identif
ied as bovine ehrlichiosis. Clinical signs were observed 23 to 116 day
s after the animals were turned out on pasture. Main symptoms were fev
er and reduced milk yield. All animals were infested with ticks and sh
owed a severe leucopenia. In buffy coat preparations Ehrlichia phagocy
tophila could be identified in neutrophils and eosinophils, rarely in
monocytes. All six cows could be successfully treated with oxytetracyc
line.
