Abstract
The presence of smectite-rich vertisols on the western coast of Maleku la Island (Vanuatu) attest to the presence of a dry and contrasted cli mate during the later Quaternary period. The neoformation of gypsum in these vertisols occurred during the drier and windier period of the l ast glaciation.
