Jl. Welcomme, THE OLDEST PROBOSCIDEAN SKULL IN EUROPE, GOMPHOTHERIUM-HANNIBALI NOV-SP FROM THE LOWER MIOCENE OF LANGUEDOC (SOUTHERN FRANCE), Comptes rendus de l'Academie des sciences. Serie 2, Mecanique, physique, chimie, sciences de l'univers, sciences de la terre, 319(1), 1994, pp. 135-140
A new species of Elephantidae, Gomphotherium hannibali is described. T
he specimen is a skull which has recently been found in Lower Miocene
sediments of the Herault Valley (Southern France). Geological studies
and new fossiliferous sites shed light on the stratigraphical situatio
n of this fossil in its regional context. This fossil is considered to
be the oldest proboscidean skull found until now in Europe. This new
fossil supports the hypothesis of the existence of several different l
ineages of gomphotheres after their first appearance in Eurasia (MN3-M
N4).
