Abstract
The adduct formed in aqueous solution after the reaction of photolytic ally generated HO. radical with adenine at the C(8) position, Ade-8-OH ., is oxidized by ferricyanide or molecular oxygen to give 8-hydroxyad enine (8-OH-Ade). In the former case, Ade-8-OH. is oxidized by electro n transfer, whereas, in the latter, it undergoes oxygen addition, form ing a peroxyl radical, Ade-8-OH-O-2(.). From a comparison of the yield s of El-OH-Ade in both cases, it is found that only 34%, at most, of t he Ade-8-OH-O-2(.) radicals eliminate superoxide anion. (C) 1997 Elsev ier Science S.A.
