Chemical etching of thin foils of polymers which were irridiated with
heavy ions in order to produce filters has already been done since lon
g time. This paper reports on first attempts to produce microholes in
rather thick filter material. Polypropylene (PP) was used as the mater
ial to be etched because of its sufficient resistance against a large
number of inorganic and organic chemicals. First experiments demonstra
ted that micropores could be etched in up to 150 mum thick PP foils.
