Abstract
We deal with the synthesis of diffractive optical elements for the gen eration of confined beams in free-space propagation. Our main objectiv e concerns the optimization of the trade-off among beam confinement, d iffraction efficiency, and technical feasibility. Solutions are derive d from a purely theoretical analysis, and they are then tested experim entally. (C) 1997 Optical Society of America.
