Physical bonding between the graphite fiber and the aluminum matrix in
the graphite-fiber-reinforced aluminum matrix composite materials (Gr
(f)/Al) was manifested by the extended fine structure analysis of the
electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Diffusion bonding due to the
dissolution of carbon into aluminum was demonstrated with quantitativ
e chemical analysis of EELS. Reaction bonding, morphology and distribu
tion of the reaction product Al4C3 were studied by transmission electr
on microscopy (TEM) and high resolution electron microscopy (HREM). Me
chanisms of the effect of processing parameters on interfacial bonding
s were also discussed.
