The effect of the bottom structure and acoustical characteristics on t
he space-frequency dependences of losses is analyzed. The relation of
optimal propagation frequencies (at which sound transmission losses ar
e a minimum) with the characteristics of a layered bottom in a shallow
sea is studied. A method far refining the layered seafloor characteri
stics using space-frequency dependence of losses near the optimal freq
uency is suggested. The seafloor characteristics are reconstructed fro
m an experimental space-frequency dependence of losses with the use of
geographical data about seafloor structure.
