Synchrotron-radiation-excited angle-integrated photoemission spectra o
f PtGa2 are presented. The spacings of the three Pt 5d bands were dete
rmined and were interpreted to yield the crystal-field and the spin-or
bit parameters of 0.90+/-0.05 and 0.56+/-0.05 eV, respectively. The en
ergy variation of the three Pt 5d photoemission-peak intensities has b
een derived at photon energies of 45, 80, and 120 eV from measurements
on PtGa2. The binding energies at Gamma(8)(1), Gamma(7), and Gamma(8)
(2) for PtGa2 are within 10% of the corresponding values for Au metal,
suggesting the electronic structures of these two materials are very
similar.
