Lens luxation is a common hereditary ocular disease in terrier breeds.
If not detected early, lens luxation invariably leads to vision threa
tening ocular diseases such as retinal detachment an. glaucoma. Succes
sful management of lens instability requires that the lens be removed
as early as possible, and preferably before luxation has occurred. Wit
h attention to exacting detail, the displaced lens cannot only be remo
ved, but it can be replaced with a prosthetic intraocular lens that is
stabilized within the eye with sutures of 10-0 prolene. With early de
tection and aggressive surgical intervention, the prognosis for vision
in dogs with lens instability should be good.
