The effect of high pressure (up to 10 GPa) on the emission spectrum of
alpha-Al2O3:Mn4+ was studied. It is shown that R1[E-2((E) over bar)--
>(4)A(2)] and R2[E-2(2 (A) over bar)-->(4)A(2)] spectral lines tend to
shift linearly to red. The sensitivity of R1 and R2 upon pressure in
alpha-Al2O3:Mn4+ is greater than in ruby. The position of the R1 and R
2 lines was calculated assuming that these effects are due to a decrea
se in the interionic distance at the high pressure. Results of calcula
tion agree well with all experimental data over a considered pressure
range (disagreement less than 0.07%).
