Earthquakes are one of the most destructive of all natural disasters.
This article discusses the consequences of earthquakes on material pro
perty. In addition, measures for the control and reduction of the cons
equences of earthquakes are described. Emphasis is placed on appropria
te preparation by the general population and the need for a rapid and
efficient response of governmental agencies. Finally, the experience o
f the staff of the Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering
