This paper describes an anti-collision system using frequency modulati
on (FM) and operating in continuous wave (CW) mode. The goal of the an
ti-collision system is to keep a car at a safe distance from any obsta
cle in front of it. For this purpose, the spectrum analysis of the rad
ar signal is achieved using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) with windowin
g and the Bartlett estimate, in order to measure the range to the targ
et (obstacle) and its relative speed. The experiments were carried out
with a 10.5 GHz microwave radar sensor and it has been demonstrated t
hat it is not necessary to average different periodograms. Results con
cerning the position of the target and its relative speed are given an
d discussed for a single target (obstacle) and the simultaneous detect
ion of several targets. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
