Abstract
Three-dimensional finite element modeling of residual stresses in a gi rth-welded pipe is presented in this paper, with an emphasis on modeli ng procedures for the global residual stress characteristics. The shel l element model with a heat source moving along the circumferential jo int is demonstrated to be cost effective and capable of predicting the global residual stress features. Transient residual stress behaviors near the weld start and stop locations are discussed. The effects of p ipe wall thickness and welding speed on residual stresses also are pre sented in this paper.
