A weak lithium photoexcitation resonance with completely empty K and L
shells (KL-hollow lithium) has been discovered using synchrotron radi
ation and photoion spectroscopy. This Li (3, 3, 3) resonance was obser
ved in the doubly charged Li++ photoion yield spectrum at 175.25 eV an
d demonstrates electron correlation involving all three electrons in t
he excitation process. Resonance parameters obtained from the data sho
w excellent agreement with the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock calculati
on which assigns 3s(2)3p as the dominant configuration.
