Abstract
A polarizer that uses the combined effects of birefringence and diffra ction has been realized experimentally. A sheet of calcite was taken a s the substrate, and a series of grooves with a sawtooth profile was m anufactured on its surface by optical grinding and polishing. The samp le polarizer shows good polarizing performance in test. The measured e xtinction ratio is better than 2 x 10(-4) and can be improved further. (C) 1997 Optical Society of America.
