The monomer content and the ratio of monomer to emulsifier in styrene
microemulsion were greatly uplifted when it was stabilized with an emu
lsifier with Y structure, The microemulsion was polymerized in dilatom
eter with potassium persulfate as an initiator, The change of polymeri
zation rate with conversion was recorded, and the plateau of polymeriz
ation rate in microemulsion polymerization of styrene was first observ
ed. The length of the plateau was shortened with the increase of KPS c
oncentration and emulsifier concentration, or with the decrease of mon
omer concentration, The polymerization kinetics and the polymerization
mechanisms were also discussed.
