Abstract
Epidemiological studies have documented a high prevalence of diabetic neuropathy. The risk of lower leg amputation is increased three to fou r times in patients with clinical signs of neuropathy and ankle weakne ss is more common than hitherto recognized. Increased nerve hydration and increased expression of low affinity p75 receptor for neurotrophin s suggest new therapeutic potentials for the prevention of diabetic ne uropathy.
