Wh. Chen et Tf. Huang, STRESS SINGULARITY OF EDGE DELAMINATION IN ANGLE-PLY AND CROSS-PLY LAMINATES, Journal of applied mechanics, 64(3), 1997, pp. 525-531
By utilizing the general solutions derived for the plies with arbitrar
y fiber orientations under uniform axial strain (Huang and Chen, 1994)
, the explicit solutions of the edge-delamination stress singularities
for the angle-ply and cross-ply laminates are obtained. The dominant
edge-delamination stress singularities for the angle-ply laminates are
found to be a real constant, -1/2, and a pair of complex conjugates,
-1/2 +/- i/2 pi In {(b + root b(2) - a(2))/a}. Far the cross-ply lamin
ates, the significant effect of transverse shear stresses of the lamin
ate is considered and the dominant edge-delamination stress singularit
ies are shown as -1/2 and -1/2 +/- i/2 pi ln {(c(2) + root c(2)(2) - 4
c(1)c(3))/2c(1)}. a, b, c(1), c(2), and c(3) are the corresponding com
bined complex constants. In addition, two elementary forms of edge-del
amination stress singularity, say, r(-1/2) and r(delta r) (ln r)(n)(de
lta(r) = n - 3/2, n = 1, 2...) exist for both the angle-ply and cross-
ply laminates. Excellent correlations between tile present results and
available solutions show the validity of the approach. The deficienci
es of the solutions available in the literature ape compensated. New r
esults for other angle-ply and cross-ply laminates are also provided.
