Xj. Yu et R. Tapling, POLICY PERSPECTIVES - ENVIRONMENTAL-MANAGEMENT AND RENEWABLE ENERGY IN THE PACIFIC ISLANDS, Journal of environmental management, 51(1), 1997, pp. 107-122
Energy supply and consumption have contributed to local environmental
problems in the Pacific Island region. With respect to environmental m
anagement in the region, development of renewable energy systems could
be an important strategy. However, renewable energy systems have rece
ived little attention. In this paper, we analyse possible solutions fo
r developing renewable energy in the Pacific Island region from policy
perspectives. We believe that implementing national energy policies i
n favour of renewable energy, furthering development of renewable ener
gy via international aid, and providing sufficient capital resources a
nd technical assistance will greatly enhance renewable energy systems.
With respect to financial assistance, technical support, human resour
ces and institutional development, the involvement of local people and
joint ventures between donor countries and the Pacific Island nations
are recommended as policy formulation and implementation measures. (C
