A large-scale use of polymeric solid electrolytes in electrochemical d
evices calls for new materials with high conductivity, thermal and ele
ctrical stability over charge-discharge cycles, good mechanical proper
ties, compatibility with the electrodes, high current densities. Modem
preparation techniques like sol-gel allow us to explore new classes o
f composite materials like glass-polymers. We present sol-gel synthesi
s, electrical and thermal characterization of a new solid electrolyte
based on a matrix made with poly(ethylene oxide) and glassy lithium tr
iborate, which has been doped with lithium salts. We obtained a conduc
tivity at room temperature similar to 10(-5) ohm(-1)cm(-1), which allo
ws us to envisage some useful technological applications in electroche
mical devices.
