Abstract
Measurement of infrared emission spectra for boron-based pyrotechnic c ombustion has enabled the elucidation of a number of boron oxidation p roducts. The raw spectra were corrected for instrument responsivity an d atmospheric attenuation far the region 1500 to 3000 cm(-1). The alka li metal metaborates and boron oxide (B2O3) were among the principal c ombustion products depending on which of three different oxidants were used. In addition, thermochemical modeling studies were undertaken an each composition to predict the combustion products. The thermochemic al modeling data were qualitatively in agreement with the identified c ombustion products.
