New phases containing tetrameric and pentameric mesitylcopper have bee
n isolated from ether solvents and characterized with single-crystal X
-ray diffraction. Mesitylcopper crystallized from toluene, which is a
widely used reagent, has been found to contain one lattice solvent mol
ecule. On the basis of these findings and cryoscopic molecular weight
determinations, an equilibrium between a tetramer and pentamer in both
etheral and aromatic solutions is proposed.
