The chemical and physicochemical properties of lignin isolated from sp
ent liquor obtained on trichloroacetic acid pulping of spruce wood wer
e studied. Trichloroacetic (TCA) acid lignin is free soluble, especial
ly in tetrahydrofuran. By elemental and functional group analysis the
C-9 formula was deduced: C9H6.79O2.64(OCH3)(1.11)(OH)(0.63)(Ar). Compa
red to a series of acid organosolv lignins, TCA lignin has a high meth
oxyl and phenolic OH content, higher (M) over bar n ((M) over bar n= 2
330) and a low polydispersity of 1.9. Crude TCA lignin contains high a
mounts of chlorine bound as easily removable trichloroacetyl ester gro
ups.
