Because of the division state of nanosized iron-vanadium spinels, iron
and vanadium ions are oxidized within the spinel structure. Calorimet
ric and thermogravimetric analyses, such as infrared spectroscopy, sha
w that Fe-B(2+), V-B(3+) and Fe3+ are successively oxidized into Fe3and V5+ ions below 450 degrees C The mixed valency cation-deficient sp
inels resulting from these oxidations have a vacancy content that incr
eases with x, which may be higher than those found as yet for this typ
e of oxide.
