In this review substitution reactions of a variety of technetium compl
exes are described in comparison with the corresponding rhenium comple
xes. Although both technetium and rhenium complexes are substitution-i
nert, technetium complexes in dissociative processes generally react f
aster than corresponding rhenium complexes. On the other hand, in a ra
ther exceptional case with a small ratio of the rate constants k(Tc)/k
(Re), the reaction is considered to proceed via an associative mechani
sm.
